Statement of Faith

The Apostle’s Creed is the oldest formal statement of belief that exists in the history of Christianity, appearing in documents as early as the year 100 AD.  Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, wrote toward the end of the fourth century that the Apostle’s Creed had been used throughout the Christian world since before the end of the first century.  He pointed to the written and oral traditions of the church that were passed down from the Apostles to their successors.  This tradition states that the Creed was originally used as a catechism  for new converts and recited by them at their baptism.   Many legends dating from the early centuries of the Church teach that the Creed was actually written by the twelve Apostles, each contributing a statement.

As we study the Apostle’s Creed, it is evident that many points of debate and views held in much esteem by modern churches are missing.  In the Creed we will discover only the raw basics of Christianity.  All secondary points of doctrine and dogma are not to be found.  All of the secondary and nonessential beliefs and opinions that are required for membership are also not included.  The topics that divide Christian from Christian and church from church are also missing.  What can we conclude from these facts?  So much of our secondary beliefs were not even mentioned by the Early Church, by the Apostles, and their successors.  So much of what we defend and demand acceptance for is not even mentioned.  The Apostle’s Creed was recited by ancient Christians during days of persecution and martyrdom.  This Creed, these core beliefs, were worth dying for.  The conclusion for modern Christians is this:  There are really only a very few truths that we should live and die for.  All secondary and opinionated topics and beliefs should be left to each individual to decide for himself.  In the words of G. K. Chesteron concerning the Apostle’s Creed, (and also in the song of Rich Mullins) “I did not make it, God made it, and it made me.”

The Apostle's Creed

2. And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:

3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary:

4. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell:

5. The third day he rose again from the dead:

6. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:

7. From thence he shall come to judge the quick (living) and the dead:

8. I believe in the Holy Ghost:
